Thanksgiving week

 This week was a short and busy week! We talked about turkeys and the parts of a turkey in science. We learned about the letter Yy, the words my and by, and started working on counting all the way to 100 and counting by 10s.

 

We made a "Numbers by 10s" number line with little turkeys. 

 

We talked about how to label and why we label. We then labeled a picture of a turkey.

 

We also got to make a turkey headband!!

Last week of transportation

We had such a fun filled week this week!

 



 It started out with a visit from SubZero Ice Cream.

 

 

They showed us how they use a special chemical to almost instantly freeze cream into ice cream!

 

 

Because we were talking about boats this week, we made paper plate boats...

 

 

Then watercolor painted a background to add our boats to.

 

 

We also practiced for our boat race by blowing cotton balls back and forth across the table while talking about how our breath is a gas that can move things.

 

 

 

Finally the day of our boat race arrived!

 

 

They had so much fun racing their boats! We even made ribbons afterwards!!

First week of transportation

This week we started our transportation unit. We reviewed teen numbers by practicing making a number line. We worked on reading our sight words by reading sentences and matching them up to pictures. We also made wooden and paper airplanes then tested which flew better by taking them outside and practicing flying both. Finally, we had a surprise guest... a pilot! He talked to us about the parts of a plane and how he flies one!

Transportation week 2

This week we continued talking about forms of transportation by learning about trains and other types of land transportation.  We also learned about the letter Pp, numbers in the 20s, and the word stop.

We got to practice being independent by doing family style dining for snack.  We have special pitchers that allow the children to pour their own drinks and used tongs to serve their own snack.

We practiced writing by doing a jourbal entry about what trains carry. We also practiced our sight words by stamping them.

After talking about stoplights and what the different colors mean, the children made their own stoplights.

We even made air popped popcorn and talked about how the liquid in the corn kernel gets hot and explodes when it turns to a liquid. We then got to try different topping on our popcorn then graphed our favorites!

Last week of pumpkins unit

This week we learned about the letter Rr and are now officially half way through the alphabet! We also continued working on teen numbers and 2D and 3D shapes.

 

 

We also talked about what animals do in the fall when the weather gets cooler (hibernate, migrate, adapt) by making a bear cave...

 

and "flying" South to get food (goldfish crackers).

 

We had a great time being a part of the fall parade.

 

 

Plus we all looked amazing in our costumes!

 

 

We made our friends into mummies.

 

 

 

We played a ping pong ball toss game.

 

 

We made candy corn pudding.

 

 

We got to decorate picture frames with our fall pictures in them.

 

 

We even got to pick out pumpkins and decorate them!!

Second Week of Pumpkins and Fall

This week we continued to learn about pumpkins and how leaves change colors in the fall. We learned about the letter Bb, worked more on our teen numbers, and talked more about the parts of a shape (sides, vertices, etc.).

 

We practiced our letter recognition and beginning sound skills by putting together letter puzzles.

We also did a letter collage where the children looked at each picture, determined if it started with the letter Bb, circled the picture if it did and crossed it out if it didn't. Then, they cut the letter Bb pictures and glued them to their letter Bb page.

We also did a letter Bb practice book where the children practiced skills like differentiating between uppercase and lowercase Bbs, writing the letter Bb, reading words that start with a Bb, and drawing pictures of things that start with a Bb.

To practice our teen numbers, the children got a set of teen number flashcards and stickers. They then decided what number was on the front of the card and added that many stickers to the back. If they couldn't recognize the number, we encouraged them to look at the 1 on the front, put 10 stickers on the back, then look at the second part of the number on the front and add that many more stickers to the back. For example, if the number on the card was 17, they would put 10 and 7 more stickers on the back.

We also did a 4-day long art project. We watercolor painted a fall tree...

Punched fall colored holes, glued them on...

Then added buttons!

Finally, we introduced story elements and started talking about the parts of a story!

Pumpkins Week One

This week was the first week of our Pumpkins unit. We talked a lot about the life cycle of a pumpkin in addition to the letter Hh, teen numbers, and the words he and she.

 

We cut open a pumpkin and explored the inside. We saved some of the pumpkin seeds to roast for cooking then filled the pumpkin with dirt then predicted what would happen if we watered the pumpkin.

 

We practiced our cutting skills by making some orange "pumpkin" lanterns to hang up for a fall decoration. 

 

 

We started our shapes focus by not only reviewing our basic shapes but also by introducing some new math vocabulary.

 

 We learned what the words "side" and "vertex" (or corner) mean in terms of shapes then practiced making shapes with colored popsicle sticks.

 

 

After introducing the letter Hh, we made an H is for House craft to add to our craft books.

 

We also learned to differentiate between uppercase and lowercase Hh by sorting them out.

 

We practiced our new sight words: he and she.

 

For cooking, the children helped get seeds out of a pumpkin, wash them off, then roast them in a toaster oven before taste testing them. 

They loved them!

 

We also practiced our teen numbers by doing a few pages in our teen numbers book. The children got to use one-hole paper punches to punch ten frames to correspond to the number on each page.

 

We also talked about different ways to make 10 (pictures, ten frames, base ten blocks, etc.)
