Oceans week 1

We started our water unit this week by learning about the parts of a fish and what it's like to be a fish.

We started an 8-page book project that will be completed the 3rd week of our water unit.
We reviewed uppercase and lowercase letters by matching them up using letter beads.
We also reviewed syllables by sorting ocean pictures by the number of syllables they had.
We explored seashells by using our 5 senses to see how they felt, smelled, looked, sounded, and tasted (or thought they would taste since we don't usually taste seashells).
We got to use our magnifying glasses to get a really close look at the seashells.

Have a great weekend!

Earth unit week 2

It was such a fun and busy week this week as we finished up our Earth unit!

After reading "The Lorax", we learned how to draw him and added some fun truffula trees.
We also made Earths by coloring coffee filters with markers and spraying them with water. Then we colored rainbows, cut them out, added them to the Earths, and glued them to black paper. Finally, we traced our hands, cut them out, and wrote some ways that we can help save the Earth before adding them to the picture!
After discussing ways to reuse trash, we worked in pairs to make cardboard boxes into something new. These two made theirs into a boat and pushed each other around!
These two decided to make a roller coaster out of their box!
For one of our science projects, we tried to predict what would happen if we put a gummy worm in water. Then, after a few hours in the water, we pulled the gummy worms out and compared them to our non-water worms to see that they had absorbed some of the water and looked like they had grown!
For cooking, we made gummy worm popsicles by putting a few gummy worms in a glass and pouring in white grape juice before putting them in the freezer.
While we waited for our popsicles to freeze, we got to enjoy our green snack of green apples, pears, broccoli, grapes, cucumber, and celery!!
We also reused cardboard tubes by turning them into binoculars!
Finally, the popsicles were done and they loved them!
We finished off the week by having our first grade buddies come over and help us make newspaper hats to go with our binoculars!

Have a great weekend!

Earth unit week 1

We started out the week with a visit from the dentist! They talked to us about brushing and flossing our teeth twice a day.
We also have been observing our worm friends that we met on Monday afternoon.
We pretended that these pieces of yarn were worms that we were "studying" and needed to count and graph.
We also painted flower pots.
We have been keeping a journal of what our worms have been doing and keeping a very close eye on them throughout the week.
For cooking, we made dirt cups. The children measured out milk to add to pudding mix.
After mixing up the pudding, the crushed up chocolate animal crackers and added them to the top to look like dirt.
Then after adding a gummy worm, we got to eat our "dirt"!
Finally, we made wormy paintings using some brown, black, and gray paint and some yarn as our worms. Then wrote a bit about them.

Have a great weekend!

Last week of dinosaurs

We finished up our Dinosaur unit this week by learning about fossils, how they are formed, and what scientists learn from them.

We used playdough to try making our own fossils with little plastic dinosaurs.

We used number lines to practice addition (in terms of counting on).

After practicing making fossils with the playdough, we got to make our own fossils with salt dough.

We learned about how paleontologists uncover fossils and record data about them by "uncovering" our own dinosaurs (fruit snacks) and graphing which ones we found.

The children had to find the fruit snacks that were buried in rocks (grape nuts cereal).

We also reviewed our CVC word building by making CVC words, sounding them out, and deciding if they were a real or nonsense word.

We even got to experiment with a plant that was around when dinosaurs existed. It can hibernate for up to 50 years and still rehydrate!

One of our favorite art projects was to watercolor a mystery picture to discover a dinosaur skeleton. The skeleton was drawn on in white crayon so, as the children painted over it with watercolors, the paint didn't stick to where the bones were revealing a skeleton.

Then we wrote about the kind of dinosaur we found and what it eats.

Next week we start our Earth unit where we will be talking about recycling and earthworms!

Have a great weekend!

Week 2 of dinosaurs

We had a super busy week this week!

We continued to work on addition strategies by learning to use snap cubes to find the different ways to make 10.

One of our favorite art projects was our dinosaur sunset painting. The children painted a sunset then added their grass and dinosaur silhouette to finish it off.

We also got a visit from some adorable baby chicks!

To finish up the week, we did some Peep science with our first grade buddies. We predicted what would happen when we put marshmallow Peeps in water, clear soda, and a vinegar/baking soda mixture. Then recorded what happened to them!

And of course we got to try the Peeps when we were done!

Have a great weekend!
